Lady Gaga Plays Coy Over Whether “Why Did You Do That?“ Is A Bad Song

Lady Gaga’s A Star Is Born character gamely defended her catchy song “Why Did You bởi That?” in the film—but the singer herself might not be so fond of the track. Then again, maybe she is! In a new interview with Variety, Gaga played coy when asked her opinion on the divisive hit.

“When we see her on Saturday Night Live and she’s singing a tuy nhiên about why vị you look so good in those jeans, it’s almost the antithesis of where we started,” Gaga said. “That is relatively shallow.”

Diane Warren, who co-wrote the tune, has already said that she never intended it khổng lồ be a bad song: “This was a fun song, and I love fun pop songs. Not everything has lớn be serious all the time,” she told The thủ đô new york Times in October. It’s unclear whether Gaga’s statement on the matter comes with a value judgment attached. For his part, Bradley Cooper has been more willing to give the song credit than his character, Jackson Maine, was in the film: “I don’t necessarily view her music as superficial,” the actor told Variety.

“I think she’s performing with all her heart.”

Speaking of Cooper: Variety’s latest Star Is Born feature story also reveals that Jackson could have met another fate in the film. In the first script he read, Warner Bros. Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich told Variety, Jackson swam into the ocean to lớn commit suicide. By the time the film started shooting, that scene had changed to Jackson riding his motorcycle recklessly—meeting a fate similar to lớn that of Kris Kristofferson’s tragic character in the 1976 version of the film, who crashes his Ferrari. “But Bradley changed his mind, and came khổng lồ see me and pitched the idea of what he ended up shooting,” Emmerich said. “I think he was right. When I watch the movie now, I can’t imagine it ending any other way.”

And though Gaga may have complicated feelings about “Why Did You vì chưng That?,” she is comfortable admitting that the role of Ally has been a tough one khổng lồ shake. As she told Variety, she’s unsure she’ll ever fully untangle the character from her psyche. “This has been a very transformative time for me,” she said of the film’s release. “As an artist, there’s always a feeling of, ‘Am I good enough? Am I making something honest? Am I making something true?’ There is a sort of stagnant sadness in me, wondering if I’m enough.” She felt some relief, though, as she saw the photos of herself set to lớn accompany the article, noticing that the sadness appeared to lớn have left her eyes.

Whether or not she’s ever able to lớn fully let go of her role, Gaga is intentionally hanging on lớn a good amount of Star Is Born memorabilia: Ally’s songbook, a bottle of Mr. Bubble from a certain love scene, and Jackson’s shirt. “These are heirlooms, or they will be heirlooms one day,” Gaga said. “They are things I will want khổng lồ show my little girl or little boy and say, ‘Here they are. You can touch them.’ I want them to have a close, tangible, poetic experience with the film the way I have.”
